Dr. Vivrette is Board Certified in Veterinary Internal Medicine.  What does that mean for me and my horse?

After graduation from veterinary school, veterinarians take licensing examinations and can then start working in a practice.  Some recent graduates might choose to participate in an internship that allows them to focus on only horses, or only small animals. After an internship, a few veterinarians might choose to pursue board certification through a residency program.

The process to become board certified is long and rigorous. Veterinarians wishing to become board certified must complete an intense residency program, meet specific training and caseload requirements, perform research and have their research published. This process is supervised by current ACVIM Diplomates, ensuring consistency in training and adherence to high standards. Competition for residency positions is fierce, and only the brightest veterinarians are selected. Once the residency has been completed, the veterinarian must sit for and pass a rigorous examination. Only then does the veterinarian earn the title of ACVIM Diplomate.

Only veterinarians who have successfully completed the certification requirements of the ACVIM are Diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and have earned the right to be called Specialists or Experts in Veterinary Internal Medicine. The term "ACVIM Diplomate" refers to a veterinarian who is board certified in Veterinary Internal Medicine.

Rapid advances in the veterinary profession can make it difficult for veterinarians to remain current with recent developments. Internal Medicine Specialists possess the training, expertise and equipment to work through the most complicated illness, diagnose the problem and determine the best therapy for your horse. They are the experts in gastrointestinal disease, treating sick foals, heart and lung problems, and managing endocrine problems.

Dr. Vivrette believes that her specialization in internal medicine gives her tools to diagnose medical problems as quickly as possible.  This allows for optimal and up-to-date treatment options. As important as diagnosis and treatment is, Dr. Vivrette uses her specialized skills to help prevent diseases and injury in your horse.
