New Deworming Protocol
New information is available documenting varying degrees resistance of different classes of parasites to the dewormers we usually use. The traditional practice of rotating dewormers every 2 months has contributed to the resistance problem. New recommendations are to perform a fecal exam on your horse and determine the parasite egg count. The horse will be classified as a no/low, medium or high egg shedder. No/low shedders will be dewormed two times a year, in October and April, using ivermectin with praziquantel (eg. Zimectrin Gold) or moxidectin with praziquantel (Quest Plus). Medium and high egg shedders should be dewormed with Ivermectin Gold or Quest Plus and have a fecal egg count repeated 2 weeks later. These horses may need to be dewormed one or two additional times between October and April. We do not need to deworm horses during the summer in North Carolina - the high temperatures kill the larva in the pastures thereby breaking the life cycle of the parasites. Please call Dr. Vivrette if you have questions about deworming your horses.Triangle Equine's 60 Day Back-to-work Schedule
